What we mean

Observing the relationship between people and spaces

In this training, neuro-architecture refers to a multidisciplinary approach to the built environment. It draws on reference points from perception, cognition and psychology to question how a space is experienced and used.

The study focuses in particular on light, colours, shapes, materials, sounds, smells, spatial organisation and sensory needs. These elements are analysed as components of occupants’ experience, without attributing any automatic or guaranteed effect to them.

The training is neither medical nor therapeutic. It offers reading and design tools intended for interior architecture, decoration and design practices.

Who is the training for?

Professionals who design or support spaces

This training is aimed at the following profiles, depending on their project and field of work.

  • Architects and interior architects
  • Decorators and space designers
  • Home and design professionals
  • Professionals working in workplaces
  • Professionals from school, medical, social or specialised spaces
  • People in career transition or retraining, after checking the path is suitable

Learning objectives

Moving from understanding to a well-argued analysis

The objectives favour observable actions applicable to a design practice.

  1. 01

Understand the main reference points used to study the perception and experience of a space.

  2. 02

Observe the influence of colours, light, shapes, materials and sensory atmospheres.

  3. 03

Analyse a place taking into account its uses and the profiles of its occupants.

  4. 04

Identify the spatial characteristics likely to support or hinder certain uses.

  5. 05

Integrate sensory, emotional and cognitive dimensions into a design process.

  6. 06

Design proposals suited to the context of a home or a professional space.

  7. 07

Justify choices to a client based on a structured analysis.

Intended skills

Tools you can use in a design practice

By the end of the path, the proposed work aims to build the following skills, without constituting an official professional certification.

Read a spatial situation

Identify the sensory characteristics, uses and constraints of a place.

Structure an analysis

Use a sensory diagnosis grid and connect observations to the project’s context.

Develop an intention

Build an emotional moodboard and integrate colours, light, shapes and materials.

Adapt and justify

Adapt one’s choices to the needs of the occupants, neurodivergent profiles included, and know how to justify them.

Teaching programme

From perceptual functioning to professional stance

The programme brings together the themes of the path. Topics related to health or sensitive approaches are presented within the limits of what design can do.

Professional applications

A range of observation and design contexts

The programme covers several typologies without promising a job outcome, professional recognition or a health result.

Home

Analyse rooms, living areas, atmospheres and occupants’ needs in a design project.

Workplaces

Observe uses, light, sound atmospheres and needs linked to activities.
